I have saw these on ebay before. my Gov spring on the right side of the Tractor where the govenor selector rod hooks the govenor there is a spring but it doesn't look anything like this spring. Do I have the wrong sping or does this go somewhere else?
I have a 38 B. Maybe I am missing this spring and that is what is causing my surging? I am not sure if its the crack in the manifold or bad carb. I am in the process of fixing the carb. anyone have a well vent for the zenith carb?
Chad

My B used to surge so bad that sometimes I would have to get off the tractor and hold the throttle rod steady to make it stop surging, other times I could choke it on and off real fast to make it stop. I had a spring at the carb but it wasn't the correct one, bought one from Agco and it works so much better. I've seen a lot of B's and C's without springs and the owners say they don't surge, but on my tractor it made a huge difference.

Hi Chad,

Here's a photo of how that spring hooks up. You need to blindly slip the long loop of the apring up between the manifold and the block to hook it over that stud:

It hooks on a manifold stud directly above the cotter key that is in the linkage. That lets the spring work both ways.

This is a drawing that shows the two springs. The surge spring as called by most is called a link spring in the drawing. It is a light spring and if the cross over arm is not correct with every thing else that spring will not stop the surging. A light hunting, it will help. A strong hunting or surge it will take adjustments in the linkage as well as some possable carburetor adjustments. Mix and matching carburetor parts can also result in surging by having the wrong size venturi for the engine air flow.

LOL Kinda funny that I have never seen where this spring was on my '39 and have never seen it. Made me think it was the "other spring" for the governor.

My tractor doesnt hunt for idle at all tho. Some times it will bog/ slow down in 3rd gear, but I think thats mostly cuz it keeps dropping #4 cylinder..... ..... .
