Allis B rocker arms..out of line??

I just rebuilt the head for my "42 B..reground valves, new guides and a new rocker shaft. I noticed that someone had bent a couple of the old rockers to make them line up with the valve tips..pretty sad! When I installed my new, straight shaft (with straight rockers) some of the rockers are not centered directly over the valve stem tips. What the ?? The rockers are installed correctly per the book and they"re marked exhaust/intake, so it"s hard to get it wrong. The offset isn"t horrible, but it"s there and I don"t want to bend them like the previous "mechanic". The only way I can see to do a "correct" fix would be to take some metal off one side of a rocker to allow it to slide over a bit...but I"m not too crazy about that either. Has anyone else run into this? Thanks! George

Thanks Dick....I actually wanted to hear from someone that ran into this before. I know this is a modest speed engine and it probably wouldn"t do any harm, but it "rubbed" me the wrong way mechanically. I"ll remove the shaft and swap some of them around (careful to keep ex/intake right) and see if there"s an improvement. If not, I just won"t worry about it too much. After all, it WOULD make the valves rotate!

Almost all those engines that I have worked on does not have all the rocker arms 100% in the center of the valve stem. I was concerned the same as you many years back and I used machine washers to move the rockers over to center. After you have seen a hundred or so rocker arms for this engine you will find that they are not all that exact from one to the other. Check for end play on the shaft and it that is not a problem look thru all the rocker arms and see if you can make it better by switch them from one position to the other. They do need to be well over the valve stem but if you are looking for exact you will have to alter the rocker arms. It has been a while but if I remember correctly when I used machine washers to center the rocker arm I had to grind some off the opposite side of the washer.
