I have a 1943 C I recently acquired. It wants to "hunt" rather than hold a steady engine RPM. I rebuilt the carb, but still have the problem. It does not have the problem at very low idle, and the problem is very minimized at full throttle.

Any ideas what can be causing this problem?

So when does it hunt? Under heavy load or at unloaded idle? I had the same problem when cultivating corn in heavy clay in 2nd gear. Went to 1st and the problem went away. It may be a systmemic problem that the carb just can't deliver enough fuel in high-use situations.

If the tractor has been disassembled and starts surging after it is put back to gather with a different governor cover most likely you will find the problem in the cross over arm from the governor. I have a dozen or so old governor covers and when I assemble an engine I dig thru and pick out the best or what seems the best with the glasses I have on at the time. They almost always have to be slightly re bent some to get rid of the surge.

Slop in the linkage or governer will cause this. It is very common for the rod to wear against the carb arm.

If there is a small hole in the rod leading to the carb arm, an anti-surge spring can be added. It hooks over a manifold stud, search the archives of this forum to find pix. These came on the early model B's and were eliminated on the later models. What they do is preload the careb side of the system to give the governer something to load up against.

Those carbs can be a pain at times. One problem is the fact that it doesn't have an adjustable main jet and it doesn't take much dirt etc to clog them up just enough to cause a problem. BTDT and I still have problems off and on on my C. Every once in a while I have to spray the mani jet out with carb cleaner then I'm good to go for a few weeks again
