Looking at an Allis Chalmers 190XT Series III diesel. Has 5100 hours on it. I got to use itthis weekend for a while discing. Runs real good and pulls like nothing else. I was wondering what some of your opinions are about these tractors are, good and bad before I make an offer on it. Thanks for your help, Chris

Make sure all the gears work, and that the tractor comes out of gear when you put the Power Director in neutral. Check to see if the transmission oil and Power Director/hydraulic oil are at the same level. If the Power Director reads past the mark on the dipstick and the transmission dip stick is dry then the seal between the transmission and the Power Director is bad.
Pull the drain plug on the motor and see if any coolant comes out-if there is a little bit then there are some o-rings that aren"t up to snuff. In that event, a bottle of Stop Leak will take care of minor leakage. If it smokes a lot, it IS after all an Allis Chalmers but if it smokes excessively you might be looking at a turbo or an injection pump/injectors, or something as simple as an air filter. Check the weep hole on the water pump.
That"s about it. Solid tractor.

Like most tractors, it depends on how it has been taken care of. XT's were a good hard pulling tractor, not to mention fuel efficient. I would assume that at those hours, it has been overhauled. I've never seen one last over 4500 hours. In my opinion, the 190 series was the handiest, feature filled tractor of the time with all the controls at your right hand. I've heard of them popping out of gear and such things, but have never experienced that myself. Again, it all depends on who had it and how it was taken care of.

We've never had a 301 die before 5000 hrs, and we work em hard, it's all how ya take care of them.
