Is there any way to clean brake linings that got oil soaked? I put new linings on last fall and the seal must have got damaged then, anyhow the linings are oily now. Hate to put new back on. Thanks for any ideas. Will

i take my propane turkey cooker boil them in hot water and dawn dish soap

I purchased a old crane, just month ago the company told me to go to any furnature store and buy pumise (spelling?) powder. It is supposed to be very fine in texture. Brake cleaner will work pretty good on oil soaked brakes. We had a old millitary 6 x 6 converted to a fire truck. What does anyone do when you have a plug that is exactly like a rear end check plug? fill it with 90 weight oil--correct? Well the military operators manual told us not so fast! --as it was called a inspection plug for the brakes. We did have a heck of a time even after putting in new brakes as the oil just seemed to come out of the wood work. We then tried brake cleaner in excessive amounts, make that very excessive amounts, and it did get over it.

Soak in aceitone for a while, or some other solvent that will evaporate.

Brake cleaner is safest; if you get a really bad one, CAREFULLY use a propane torch (acetylene too hot) and heat up the shoe lining. I would only do this on a riveted lining not a bonded one as the heat may loosen the lining. Good luck and be careful with the torch. Billy

had a fellow tell me he soaked them in gas for a few days and then reinstalled,this was on tractors.

Brake cleaner helps, but torching them to burn off the oil works great too.

Old trick we used on old trucks when the rear crankshaft seal would leak out on the clutch when the Co-ops cable lift would stand the truck on end to dump grain. We would dump in some comet scouring powder. They didnt leak all that much under normal use and only would get stood on end a coupla times a year with wheat. Corn went in the crib and the oats in the bin. Truck worked fine the rest of the year. should work on brakes as well. At the very least it would be worth a try.

I would overheat those linings by applying the brakes at a working ground speed.This will boil out most of the oil and you will notice that the brakes will work much better again.You can repeat as needed.CENTAUR

Have you tried hosing them down with spray brake cleaner?
