Allis Model B Hydraulics

Could someone advise me if I am correct by saying the hydraulics on my 1950 B work by lifting the implement with the hydraulic cylinder, but to lower the implement, it is actually done by the weight of the implement. In other words, does the hydraulic cylinder only work one way? Thanks. Any input is appreciated.
