Dads wd45 quit charging over the winter. He bought it early last summer, it had been converted to a 12 volt 1 wire alternator. It appears to be a 3 wire alternator that the previous owner hooked the main wire to the battery and covered the place where the 2 wire plug goes with silicone.I have no idea what might or might not have been done to the internals to make it a 1 wire setup. We took the alternator in to the parts store to be checked, they said it was only putting out 10 volts. We bought a new one, the counterman said we need to hook the #2 connection on the plug to the main stud the way I did on my B (per a diagram from either Duey or Rod NH.).He said the other terminal was just for the alternator light in a car and could be left empty.( This is the terminal that hooks to the ignition switch on the diagram for the B.) Does this sound right to you guys? The tractor started and ran fine all last summer, but now no matter how long it runs when you shut it off the battery is dead when you try to restart sometimes only a few minutes later. Sound and Texas are both right and either one will work. My self I also use diodes instead of the marker light. I use Radio shack part #276-1661, costs is $2.49 plus tax for 4 of them. I keep a pack of them one hand all the time but I also do a lot of 12 volt conversions so I use a lot of them

Old, I went out this afternoon and got the diodes at radio shack. What is the best way to install them? Can I just use a crimp type connector? Thanks again for all your help. Mike

Yep I use the crimp type conectors and they work well. On the diode theres a line in one end that goes to the alternator side of the wire when you hook it up

Gotta love ignorant and stupid parts counter people. Guess there has to be -SOME- job available for those that don't qualify to be a telemarketer...

Ont he 3 wire jobs, The #2 terminal does loop to the charge stud. The #1 terminal needs to be ran thru a 194 bulb ( trailer marker lamp ) and then to the switched side of the ignition. This does 2 things.. #1, it tells the alt to turn on and charge, and #2, provides enough isolation to make the ignition shutoff when you turn the key off.

I use a diode instead of a light. Cheaper and no heat is generated.

A diode works fine, however, the average person here, posting on how to hookup an alternator is probably going to be perplexed with a polarity sensitive diode instalation when they start hearing cathode / anode.. etc... From what I've seen.. the average non electronic person on most of these forums can't even wire up a headlamp..etc.. let alone a diode.. Whereas the light won't care. Besides.. the lamp is only burning during htat short time from when the ignition key is turned on untill the alternator starts.. what's that? a few seconds?

Or wire it thru an oil pressure switch. no oil pressure, no backfeed!

the best way i found to make a 12 volt alt work right with no problems is run a wire from #2 terminal on alt to ign or key switch, when key is turned on hook up wire at that connection, then run another wire from #1 terminal to the coil with a diode and it works. GM alt, good luck.
