Never owned one, but have a chance to buy either 170 or a 175. What are the pros/cons of either tractor. How reliable, problems common to models, available parts. Price?

Was never around a 170 but quite alot with a 175 great little chore tractor,Always heard that the 170 did nt have as good of brakes as the 175,

Pros- VERY Reliable, great on fuel, good all around size for many different chores, good to go to woods with because of non flat-deck foot area, perkins makes a GREAT engine, should be very reasonably priced versus a green one, second to none in power and reliability in its size, and year.

Cons- Not fast, bit confusing to shift..takes getting used to, ours always needed a shot of ether to start...no big deal.

Oh, and ours has the perkins 4 cyl. diesel. LOTS of tourque for a little tractor. And the Hi-Lo lever was great for unloading forage boxes into the ag bagger. When the bagger moved ahead, you just bumped the tractor ahead using the hi-lo lever without clutching it to put it into gear. Jon in Upstate NY

Well, I have to say that the AC 170 is one of the most impressive tractors I have ever seen over the years. I grew up around one and spent many hours taking out the manure EVERY day with ours...in the blustery cold or hot summer day. It wasn"t a road runner of a tractor, and it didn"t seem to run at high RPMs but it was second to NONE in reliability. It"s funny, because I can still remember when we were cutting corn in the fall...and when it was too wet for the AC 7020 powershift pulling the fox 2 row chopper, we"d hook the old 170 on the front so it would be 2 tractors in tandem pulling the chopper. The front wheels used to come right off the ground. The cows and equipment sold in 1999 but the 170 was kept for brush hogging and the 3pt hitch wood splitter. We call her the little allis. We had a 6060 mfwd, 6080, 7020, and 7030 and of course the 170 which was the only one we never sold. If you have the chance to buy one in good shape, you WON"T be disappointed. Good luck! Some of the best AC tractors ever built. Still need to be careful that someone hasn't ground the transmission into gear too much.

They are pretty much the same tractor, only 170 has 54 horses, 175 has 62. Same engine, just turned up on the diesel, more compression on the gas. I think mebey some late 175"s had a better front axle. My dad had a 1970 170 diesel from about "78 to "97. Really dependable good tractor.

The 170 diesel has a Perkins 236 engine. The 175 was the same block punched out to 248 cubes.

FYI....some 170's had the 248 Perkins as they were made side by side in the early 70's. I have a 170 and a 175 and both have the 4 bolt lift pump which is indicative of the 4-248.
