I am looking at a D-17 diesel that is for sale. Please someone tell me what the problem areas or weak spots are, so I will know where to look for any problems it may already have. Thanks, Norman

Check the Buda.com website should be 262ci I know it had some head issues and as someone said if you have to shoot it with Either on a warm day to start it run like H. When in good shape it's a good engine

I once had a D17G and I would say the largest fault with your prospect is the Diesel Engine. It is not a large tractor to begin with so the Gas Engine OEM is plenty powerful and efficent enough for the tractor for what ever you wish to use it for so a Diesel is not really an advantage I think. It is an alright little Tractor and I would love to have mine back now.I once had a WD45D and that Tractor was nothing but one Engine problem after another. Find yourself a good D17 w/Gas Engine and enjoy a Tractor from the past. They are a prize unto them selves.=John

I don't think the diesel engine is anything to brag about. AC was still in the learning stages. Gas is a very dependable unit. Make sure the Power Director (hand clutch) has a good snap to it, or adjustment left. Gets spendy to fix that.

If some ham fisted, uncoordinated opperator has ground the gears for years while shifting the tractor, it may jump out of gear. Drive it down hill in each gear (3rd is typically the worst if one is bad) speed it up and then quickly close the throttle. FIRST make sure the brakes work, or the ride can get wild. If the tractor jumps out of any gear, pull the shifter off and look at the gears. The problem can be worn gears or it could be the shifter forks. Forks aren`t too expensive to fix but gears can get deep into your pocket.
