hi guys
on a model b with a gemmer steering gear, should there be a grease seal where the steering shaft enters?what are the shim-like gaskets for behind the four bolt flange at that location? there seems to be some question as to whether to use grease or gear lube. what do most of you use? the grease seems to wick up the shaft. thanks for your input!

i miss read your other post. thought you were talking about he horizontal shaft. the steering shaft dwon frmo the steering wheel does not have a seal on the top. the ships are to preload the bearing as mentioned in the other post. more ships = more endshake on the shaft. the grease is a common fix. dont use real thick like tar, it should have the ability to move around, not gummy. i hand pack as it pit the cover on. just leave a small air gap for breathing.

I repaired a Gemmer box last summer and did not see a seal at the shaft. The spacer gaskets are to adjust the pre-load on the bearings, which can take out the free play in the steering worm gear.
My bearings were worn somewhat and the gasket-spacers would not take out all of the end play. I installed a snap ring on top of the bearing cup, adjusted the number of spacer gaskets and got a good snug fit. I packed it with gun grease.
