Thanks for asking- it's always been a big issue for me, because so many do not understand the difference between the two. For those of us who grew up on older tractors with non-live pto and no hydraulics- watched Dad run a Roto-Baler with the WC, stopping at every bale, without live pto.....When Dad bought the WD45 in 1956, the hand clutch let him speed up the process of baling, keep the 66 combine running, etc..... ..... .My simplest explanation of the difference is this: If you can stop wheel motion of the tractor and still maintain pto/hyd operation..... ....it is live. If you can ENGAGE pto/hyd operation INDEPENDENT of wheel motion..... ...it is independent power. Two examples-- I have AC D17, live power on pto and hyd via hand clutch. Also have several JD tractors- 3020, 4430,4240,4450- they all have independent hyd and pto.
