Does the hydraulic fluid have air in it (frothy)? If it's sucking air you can hear it when it cavitates.

It has been awhile since I had this apart. Where would it be sucking air and if so why does it work great sometimes and not others?

I don't know where it would be sucking air from, I just know how hydraulic systems work, and that's the symptoms. The reason it's intermittent is that it doesn't need much of an opening, and that opening could get intermittently plugged so it works, or the opening could be right above the level of the fluid and intermittently submersed.

Then again, I'm just making an educated guess.

BTW., does your fluid look normal? If so, then it's not air getting in.
