Pull the rubber cover on the shift lever. Underneath should be a snap ring and washer. Remove both. Pull up on the shift lever- it should come out. You need to realign the gears by moving the top of the shift forks- the three castings that you see when you look down that hole in the tower. Won't hurt to lock the foot clutch forward and throw the hand clutch forward, both will help to dislodge pressure on the gears, coming from the front. Reach in with a long large screwdriver, etc. and move the shift forks so all three are in alignment. Reassemble. Problem is that the bottom of the shift lever, and the forks, are worn. Need to build them up or replace with new. It will happen again, once it starts, and usually when speed-shifting. Extra hint- when working in hard to see areas like this- wire up a bulb holder and cable- matching the voltage- ie, 6 or 12v, with a small (dash) bulb, on skinny wire- drop it into your work area, like a tranny, etc. Works much better than trying to hold a flashlight in one hand, screwdriver in another, etc. Hook it to the battery with clips, drop it down the hole and it gives plenty of light. Also good way to check gas tank interior for junk,----any small spot.
