D-17, series 3 versus series 4. What are the diff

Am considering a D-17 series 4 gas wide front. Dad had a Series 3 narrow front, nimble, smooth, great hay and wagon tractor. What was upgraded from Series 3 to 4? I know 3 pt hitch, and many pics I see show front end wts on S-4. Did the S-4 have only one SCV outlet for rear? Did it run 2 way cyl? Thanks in advance for advice. Walter

Walt, Here is some added clarification on the series IV live pto: It was only "live" when using the power director to stop the ground travel of the tractor. Operating the foot clutch would stop the ground travel and pto - the same as on your series III. In my opinion, it is the live hydraulics and heavy duty 3 point hitch that gives this tractor utility, and makes it practical in today's agricultural environment. For example, our haybine requires two remotes with standard double acting pressure to operate it properly. The single action high pressure-low volume system on the series III, along with the light duty configured drawbar, makes the series III incompatable for this operation. Tom

All four series of D17's had live pto, not independent. Series IV had the independent hydraulics via the pump that mounted externally on the right side, where earlier series had an optional belt pulley.Drive system had a hollow shaft assembly that provided continuous power to the pump, independent of the foot clutch operation. Hydraulic valve options were upgraded, as well as the 3ph option.

other people can answer this better but i think the series 4 had full live pto and hydraulics. they also changed the hydraulic system to a high volume, low pressure system (hvlp) as opposed to the older high pressure, low volume on the previous series

The series 4 used a live hydraulic pump mounted at the belt pulley location on the earlier D17's. It has lower hydrualic pressure, around 2000 psi., the industry standard at that time. The old ones were around 3000 psi. Yes, a Series 4 was set up for two way hydraulic cylinders. The series 4 could have either 1 or 2 sets of SCV remote outlets. A series 4 was available with either a Snap Coupler hitch or the industry standard 3 point hitch. They did not all have the factory 3 point.

Also, the series 4 had a different rear end that was carried on to the 185 (of course beefed up). The drawbar was much heavier, along with the mounted hitch (3pt or snap coupler). The late series 4 had 6 bolt front hubs instead of 5 bolt. That is all I can think of for now...
