I have a 53 wd45 that recently will not start. I have gas and spark and new points and condenser. I get it to run and 2 or 3 days later I have to reset the gap through trial and error to get her to fire. I have converted it to a 12 volt sys with a reduser only the battery, alternator and snow plow run off the 12, every thing else is 6 volt Other history is she sat in a yard for 10yrs before I got it running 3yrs ago. Untill this year there was no problem with starting and running. Can I adjust the #1 cylinder to top center and adjust the distributor to just past closed? I can not at this time replace the timing chain (cold). Is there something else I have over looked or could try?

CHECK THE DISTRIBUTER DRIVE GEARS AT BOTTOM OF SHAFT FOR PROBLEM OR IN MY CASE ONE RUSTED TOOTH SKIPING ONE TOOTH AT A TIME WILL SLOWLY RETARD THE SPARK RENE'

The post secures the points inside the cap. How do you provide the counter pressure? Since the post goes through the insulator could I fill it with the silicone and spin the post to ensure coverage?

Then you may have a problem with the insulator in the side of the distubutor. Some times they go bad and cause the same type of problem

When I put new points on, I took everything apart and the insulator was cracked and fell apart. Hard to find part so I glued it back together and used a zip tie to keep it together before I replaced it. Thanks keep thinking I'm out of ideas

Glueing it doesn't work often because the crack conducts electicity. What I have done was use a wire and then take silicone and fill in around the wire. Doesn't take much to loose the power in that insulator. I have a ford that had the same problem and I did the wire thing and silicone and it has run that way for 15 years now. But before that it about drove me crazy

Points should be set at .025. Sounds like you may have a bad rotor or cap. Yes both do go bad and some times an engine will run one day and not the next because ot them being bad. This time of year if they are bad they can be real trouble because of the humidity
