Well i got the head back on and every thing was great til tried to start it. It wouldn't. So i retimed the mag to the tractor and pretty sure that the lines on the gears matched up. when i brought it up to compression it sparked the points and the bevled gear was pointing to #1. Went to start it and it fired right up and kept poping about every 5 seconds. Just to refresh this. I got a valve grind on the head, that's all they did. I cleaned bottom of the head with a wire wheel and blew it out with air. and the rest you know. Got any idea's? thanx Gary

i readjusted the valves at .012 cold leaving room for expansion. stared right up and by golly it ran. i let it warm to recommended and throttled up and pow. so i played with the mag and tuned to ear. no, so i screwed the idle adj. out about three or four turns and it stopped at full throtle. let her run a couple seconds then throttled down slowly and pow.SO i think i'm back to fuel. like Old said,he still beleives i have a carb problem and so do i now. something,maybe that main jet. OR like DickL said those plugs. i forgot to tell you's that i put CHAMPS in it J8C. Going to get some Auto's or Ngk's. what say you. thanx Gary

What's the firing order? Could you have teh #3 and #4 wires switched at the distributor?

i started it and it seem to run ok. i let it warm up and tried to pull out of the garsge and it popped alot,no power,but ran ok again when i let it just run there. i tried the spark plug wire thing . #1 when pulling plug bwire, made it backfire alot. #2 did about the same,#3 no difference in running,#4 no difference. turned the mag a little each way and it made it run a touch better. SO, like old said it must be in the carb,but what about the #3,#4 when they didn't make any difference,like Lou said? thanx for trying to help me out here, men, gary

hi OLD ,DickL, I'LL TRY THE SPARK THING. WHAT DOES that mean if it was to clear up? i checked for spark on all the plugs before starting it and they had spark. Old, i never did put in the main jet with my carb kit. didn't come with this kit. i'll have to get one if they sell them separately. he did say the valves were pretty bad and that it should run alot better,which i think it does,except for that backfiring. i opened the idle screw up while running and didn't make any difference til i screwed it in all the wayback in and it stalled.

If the miss cleared up it means the plug is bad. You can have a bad plug in a new box. You are back to fuel if you are sure you have the proper valve clearance.

Gary if I remember right thats been your problem all along right?? I still say if that is right you have a problem with your carb, and its running lean on you

If you are sure you have at (least) .010 between the end of the valve stem and the rocker arm on each and every valve then take one spark plug wire off at a time and hold it an eighth of an inch away from the plug with the spark jumping from the wire to the plug end. See if it clears up any.
