I have a 1949 Model B, A/C that I have mounted a 12kw generator on a 3 point hitch. Works like a champ,although it's a little light in the front, but a 6 foot Meyers snow blade on the front seems to level her out o.k. The generator is supposed to turn at 36oo rpm with a 7-1 ratio gearbox on it. I understand that the pto shaft turns at 560 rpm @ 1400 motor rpm. Is that infact true? If so here is my problem, how do you determine the motor rpms? My tach/dwell is for 12 volt, external coil, my B has a mag on it. Does anyone know of a way to get an actual reading on the rpms on these wonderful little machines. Thanks in advance, Stonewall

Bob and Texas Denny, thanks for getting back to me with your comments. Bob I looked ar the tach set up on the site you suggested, looks nice for a permanent set up, but am curious what they use for a pick up for the RPM reading. Texas, do you have any more information on the one you have, it sounds like what I'm looking for. I kinda figured that there had to be something out there to use on these sweet little orange machines, and from lurking in the shadows for a year or so reading the comments on this forum I knew some of you folks would have the answers. Again thanks for your help. Texas, if you have any more info on yours, post it here and I'll see it. Grateful Stonewall

There are tachs made that determine rpm by sensing current in one plug wire. I have one of these tachs and it is digital. I've also found there is quite an interest in these type of tachs in the go kart circuit as most Briggs and Tecumsah engines are magneto ignition. I found these actually on Ebay.

Try the link below for a tach.

When running the generator, you will want to know it's frequency stays near 60HZ.

Some reasonably-priced digial multi-meters have a frequency function.

Also, you can plug an analog clock into the generator, and compare the motion of it's second hand to another clock running on wall-socket power.

If the generator-driven clock is GAINING, obviously the generator is being driven too fast, and vice-versa.
