have d15 series 2 with 12 volt postive ground. recently put on a new gm 1 wire alternator and ammeter. wired it according to instructions. with
engine off and lights on, ammeter show negative on ammeter. with engine on ammeter shows no charge at all.. The battery is getting old and i have to charge it each time i use tractor.. could a bad battery keep the ammeter from showing charge????? thanks rd

update on one wire alternator..it works fine
now, you must rev it to about 2000 rpm each time
you start it then it does a good job of charging.

There are a number of different regulators that are installed in a one wire unit from different manufactuers. Most need 1400 or greater rpm in order to "excite" the regulator into the charging mode as others mentioned. If you're going to use a one wire Alt, most Alternators are Neg. grd, so you'll need to change your Positive grd system to Neg grd. Also, if your battery is borderline, spring for a new one and then make the change. A "D" series engine should be capable to energize a one wire better than the older model tractors. Another good idea is to loose the Ammeter and install a Voltmeter for more accurate charging rates along with making the electrical system much safer. At present, you're working with peaches and apples. You need to be working with all apples or all peaches to get your charging system to work correctly and be reliable. STEVE, Since I just paid almost $100.00 for the
1 wire alternator, I may as well try to work with it. You say most of those 1 wire alt's are negative ground. What is the simpliest and easiest way to change it to positive ground. Yes I really do need to get a ne battery also. I appreciate everyone's comments. rd

I dispute the concept that an volt meter makes the electrical system any -safer- than an ammeter.

I also think it's a subjective issue of which is better at gauginh charging system status.

A volt meter, on a diesel system, where the alt died.. with very little electrical load being carried by the battery will still show a 'normal' battery votlage.. even when no charge is present. An ammeter will deffinately show the -0- or discharge when the charge system dies in that case.

If anything.. I'd get both...

RD, the guys are right. the one wire alternators are know to be "hard" to get to charge. they were made for hot rods that run way up there in motor speed. it is not uncommon to have to speed the motor to 1800 to get the alternator to "kick in" and start charging. getting a smaller pulley is one fix. i like most other guys prefer the 3 wire system. they are instant charge as soon as they start turning, even at idle.

Are you sure the one wire is for Pos ground? All the ones I have seen are for Neg ground.

One wire alternator do not work well on low speed engine like tractors. I always use the stock 3 wire Delco alternators when I upgrade the electrics on a piece of farm equipment.

Most GM alternators need to run at a higher rpm than the stock generators. You may need to put a smaller drive pulley on the alternator. Also, if you use the stock wiring harness, the gauge will read discharge when the battery is charging. To change this, you will need to reverse the wires on the ammeter.
