Allis Chalmers CA clutch problem hand / foot?

I have a CA that I thought had a foot clutch problem. First let me say I never had a CA and knew nothing about them. I got it running and when you let the foot clutch out it hardly moved. I split the tractor but was suprised to see a fair amount of lining on the clutch disk. My first question is does anyone have a spec. of how thick the clutch disk should be. I don't think it is bad but since it is apart I don't want to put worn parts back in. Second, I'm guessing now that I have read other posts here is that it must be the hand clutch that is slipping. I guess that will be much easier tot ake apart than splitting the tractor like I did -- should have looked into that little lever first since i did not know what it was. Do the hand clutches fail often? Is it a conventional clutch disk set up? I'm guessing that the clutch is worn or there is oil leaking on it? What can AC expersts tell me. Thanks

I have a 1952 CA in which the hand clutch was slipping. I removed the drive shaft on that side of the tractor and installed a C drive shaft. works great. Baled over 800 squares using an MF#3 baler in summer 2006. Still working on getting hand clutch resurfaced. Just a thought for a quick fix.

Place a hunk of radiator hose or something like it on the power take off shaft so you can see it from the seat. Place the power take off in gear. Let the foot clutch out with your foot on the brakes. If it is the foot clutch the power take off will not be turning. If it is the hand clutch the power take off shaft will be turning.

there is an adjustment for the hand clutch, maybe it is adjusted wrong

Greg, The clutch is designed to function in a similar way to the foot clutch. It's normal state is fully engaged. By pulling back on the hand lever, you disengage it.

Don't have a spec on the foot clutch disk. If the rivots are well below the lining surface, the clutch has some life left. If the rivots are flush with the lining, it is gone.

Only had one CA so experience is limited. These clutches do have some problems. Mine was that it wouldn't disengage - everything attached to the lever was solid rust. I got it working without spending any cash. You may just as lucky.

You'll need a manual for the hand clutch. The mechanism is more complicated than the foot clutch. even with a manual, you'll probably scratch your head a few times. Drop me an email and I'll send you some info.
