1952 WD needs front end help!

Howdy all!

My 1952 WD wide front end gave out on me over the weekend. The front housing that sits between the frame rails had been repaired at one time and the repair finally gave way.

This tractor is very nice mechanically and cosmetically except for this repair, so, I's like to find a good used housing and just rebuild it right one time.

However, if I can't find one, I'll probably make a heavy bracket to bolt to either side of the frame and wrap around the front to support that way.

If anyone has a good used parts tractor with a good front housing, I sure would appreciate some help. This is my main working tractor that pulls our manure spreader, does our fencing, etc. and I really need to get her going soon.

Thanks in advance.

T

I don't know how bad yours is broken. I had one that two of the three bolts were stripped. I got heli-coils and repaired those two and it is holding up perfectly - it is now on my WD-45.

Might be hard to find just that housing, but for the short term you could put on a narrow front. Easy to find, not many $$$$. WC, WD, WD45, RC, would all fit. Regarding the wide front box- there were 3 and 4 bolt versions- for the front pivot plate. Also, weren't some on the WD45 made for interchanging front wheels? Bottom line, when you find a used box, make sure it matches the axle you'll be mounting to it.

JMS,

I hadn't thought of putting a tricycle front on, but that may be a good short term solution. Mine is the 3-bolt pivot plate wide front end. I live on a pretty hilly, wooded 16 acres in eastern kansas in the kansas river valley, and the wide front gives me peace of mind.

I agree that the wide front is more stable than the narrow, but both can be operated safely, and the wide front does not come with a non-tipping guarantee. Simply a matter of common sense. Grew up with narrow fronts, granted, on flat land, but tipping the loader tractor was never an issue- then, or the last 3 decades on my own in another area with some slopes. Driving a loader tractor too fast on flat ground can get you killed, just like on slopes. Just gotta watch the 'pucker factor'. When it doesn't feel right, etc. I've got a couple extra narrow fronts, but you don't need to come anywhere near this far to find a filler for you, since the narrow front was so common, and so many other models used it. Wheels and bearings interchange- then you can take your casting to a welder to get fixed, or buy time to find another. Wouldn't surprise me if you can find a narrow front for $50 or so. I have an extra complete factory WD wide front, but not interested in selling it..... ....so as usual, I have no personal interest in advising anyone. My '53 WD45 has the 3 bolt front- I think the 4 bolt would be later. Mine must be a leftover from the WD era.

the change to the four bolt front plate occurred at seial #186413, during WD45 production in 1954.

Changing steering boxes: Remove 8 bolts on the front, 4 each side. Punch out the pin on the steering knuckle, right side of the engine. Might need to loosen a side rail, pry apart a bit with a wonder bar, etc. Wiggle out the old, slide in the new-.
