Front crack pulley removal

We have taken the bolt out of the pully and soaked the pully itself, however we are still not able to get the pully free from the crank. Is there something else still holding this in place, or is it simply just stuck?

What does the key look like and does it need to come out before the pully comes off?

I recently rebuilt a 52 CA that had broken in half. I had to disassemble the engine before welding.One of the first things to remove was the crank pulley.Be sure the set screw is removed and penetrating oil may help. I wouldn't recommend using a jaw puller directly on the pulley try to back the pulley with a steel plate. I made a clamp out of 1" steel bar and put that behind the pulley and pulled from that which allowed me to apply alot of pulling pressure directly to the shaft area. I have broken crank pulleys in the past pulling direct on the v area of the pulley.

I had one that didn"t come off. I think the end of the crank can get beat up from hand cranking and you will never pull it off if that happens. 1st. remove the set scew then use a set of vee clamps in the pulley grove and use a 3 arm puller. If the pulley breakes all to peaces a new one will cost about $240. We used a Browning Hub and a regular pulley.

mine was broke off in the hole. i drilled out the screws down to the crank. fill the hole with penetrant. smack the front of the pulley to push it back a few mills, or jus to break loose the old rust and let the penetrant inside. use a 3 jaw puller, but be carefull... some have cracked the pulley getting it off.

I don't know anything about getting the pulley off but I was just reading and thought I'd chime in....I have a 52 CA, it's a sweet little tractor I like mine alot

On my CA there was an allen head set screw below the first set screw.

John,

There is a 1/2 moon key at the rear of the pulley. I would continue to soak it with liquid wrench as the pulley is rusted to the crankshaft. You might try a 3 fingered gear puller or block the pulley tight to the front engine cover and carefully use a drift pin and tap lightly on the end of the crankshaft. Are you tearing the engine down? If not, I wouldn't beat to hard on the end of the crank or you could damage the seals or possibly the bearings. Hope this will help you. I'm still trying to get the bolt out of my 51 CA. I just keep giving it a shot of penetrant each time I'm in the shop. Hopefully, I can get it out so I can finish painting!

Thank you for responding. Yes we are rebuilding it, and need to order the rebuild kit. We want to get a new bearing set and make sure we get the right ones. Good luck with your 51

if the screw was a allen screw, look in the hole, there could be another one in there yet. on my d14 i took out the allen screw then applied a puller and broke the pulley due to the second allen screw. first one locks the second one in place. Bob

Thank all of you for your replys and helpful hints. We are taking all of them to heart and working to get this accomplished. It really helps to see all sides before tearing into something causing more harm than good.

PS...Anyone out there have a carburetor for a 52 CA? At a reasonable price of coares?
