Hi all,

I have a D-14 which I haven't used in almost a year, and when I hit the starter button the starter spins but doesn't engage. Where would you start to figure it out? Thanks a lot, Eric Allen

Eric, Like the man said remove the starter. Look it over for a broken spring, loose bolts etc. Rotate the gear forward by hand..feel sticky? That might be the whole problem. A Bendix gear moves forward to engage then back when the flywheel gear speed is greater. It might just be gunked up with crud and can"t move. Clean with solvent, diesel, WD-40 etc. and dry. A couple drops (not too much) of oil in the spiral groove will help. Test with cables on the floor then reinstall and try it.

Eric same thing happened to mine. i took it off and CAREFULLY took it a part. as soon as i loosened the starter gear it clicked forward into engage position. Clean itup and check it on the floor with jumper cables to make sure it works. IF that doesn't work means it's your bendix,in the starter. easy fix yourself or take it to a staryter shop and pay $75 or more to have it rebuilt. Works for me. gary
