would a to strong a spring or to light a spring cause backfiring when taking off or any other backfiring?

Gary, That can also be lean fuel,points, crossed wires or weak fire, have had any one of these to be the culpert.

hi Jerry. this is the same AC B that was popin. Still does,i just thought that might have something to do with it. You suggested a valve job if all the other things don't work. They don't work. I'm waiting on a rebuild kit for the carb. And if that isn't it, gov bearings wore or possibly a valve job needed? That's not my cup of tea. Never did go inside the motor of anything.Guess i better get some help

I'd still almost bet you have a carb problem. I've been there 2 many times on my C and have to do the carb spray trick off and on on it. But the way the weather is here now I will not worry about any of the tractors for a few days, unless a tree falls over the road then I'll have to get pushy with the tree

You didn't put new Champion plugs in it, did you. They are "yesterday's" premium plug. I'll say no more for fear of reprisal.

No. More likely it is bad spark plugs/wires or worn bearings affecting the dwell in the magneto or distributor.
