hardened timing gears

does the timing o an engine affset how well it can start or just how well it runs or both. We have an AC200 that is really hard on starting and was wondering if this might be the problem. Once it is warmed up it starts up great and it idles and runs great. It has to be 10C to start and at that temp you would be getting lucky. Usually has to be 12-14 to start without almost deading the battry. when you plug it in it starts up great as long as it has been pluged for a few hours

Sorry, but that is the way the A/C's were even when new. That's why you always see empty starting fluid cans around an A/C owners home. The only way to get it to start better is when you rebuild it, get a TotalSeal sleeve and piston kit. You can also try a Lucas starter as they spin a little faster than the Delco starter.

That is the nature of older diesel engines. Need plugged in or a small whiff of either. Shoot, even the new pickup diesels won't start without glow plugs or some sort of intake heater.
