Lost Brake Spring

I'm in the process of replacing the brake return spring on my CA without removing the floor panel. I could get to the broken spring but it was hard to get it up thru the avail able space so I took some bolt cutters and nipped off the part that goes over the adjusting screw. The rest dropped down in front of the brake band. Is there room for it to lay in the bottom of the casting, or is there a danger that it will migrate to the final drive and cause problems?

There isn't much room. Those bands are very hard to remove if there is anything (like a mud dobbers nest) around that band. I don't know the shape and size of this spring end so my guess may be wrong. There is an oil seal between this area and the final drive pinion. If the part is small, it won't get to the final drive. For the same reason, it won't get to the differential. It might cause some problems with the brake action. If it is on the right side, it might cause trouble with the clutch. I would try to get it out but if I couldn't, I'd just watch it for a while and memorize the good sounds. If it somehow got between the lining and the drum, it would tear up the drum.

Well, I think it is to the outside of the brake but I can't be sure. I cleaned out the access hole at the bottom of the casting but I can't see it so it might have gone to the right or not be all the way down. The spring is about 1/2 inch in diameter so I don't think it can get under the band. If it is still in front, then it could cause brake operating paroblems. I'll drive it around for a few days and see if anything changes. Thanks for the info. Dave
