Allis 160 Hydraulics problem

I have a Allis 160 tractor. The hydraulics on the 3 point part jerk. When I hook a piece of equipment to the tractor, the hydraulics jump up and down. It acts like it wants to go all the way up and something is trip and it falls down a little ways and does it again and again in a fast motion. If I adjust the knob under the seat it seems to help a little, but doesn't help it enough that you can really use the equipment connected to the tractor. You have to have the lifting lever closer to the seat all the way up for it to lift. Any suggestions?

I own a 1973 AC 160 and had hydraulic problems.The system worked when I first brought it home.After using it for a period of time it began developing problems. I made a call to the previous owner and he informed me that he had some problems with the hydraulics also. He referred to them as not working for a period of time and then they would begin to work,but he never knew what was causing it.A friend of mine is a farmer and he sujested I change all filters and drain the fluids and replace with all new fluids.I went to my local AGCO/ALLIS DEALER got the correct filters and fluids,ordered owners/operarors and service manual and found out how rare they are in our area.I also learned how hard it is to find parts and the higher cost for them compared the cost of other AC tractor parts. Changing filters and fluids did not help. What did help was what my friend said to try next.Having determined that the pump was on the front end of the tractor and thinking it was not gettng and/or staying primed we took it to a roadside embankment and drove the tractor over the embankment as to have the nose of the tractor pointing down.This was a steap embankment. We let it run in this position for a short period of time and all the time moving the hydraulic controls. The system began to work so I drove it out off the embankment and the syestem has worked good ever sence and that was 8 years ago.Don't know if this will help you. Wishing you good luck. I have seen a 160 with an external pump put in front of the engine and driven off of the crankshaft pulley. The gentleman that did it said it was the only way he could cure his problems. Those that own these tractors all complain about the hydraulics and the weak brakes. I haven't found a cure for the weak brakes,yet.

I have also had a problem with my AC 160 loosing prime - have to bleed they hydraulics almost every time I use it - any suggestions

WE have a 160 Allis. We have alot of problems with the system loosing prime, but not the jerking motions you are talking about. I would check the fluid level fist. Then check all your filters - There are two. Check an owners manual for finding them. If the problem still persist, them you may have a problem with the Draft Control it seems like that would be your prolblem. Hope this helps. They are good little tractors. We bought ours and had to replace the engine, very hard to find parts for. When everything is working, they are great. We use for blading snow, plowing gardens, and have a 72" rear PTO powered tiller that we use on gardens. The creaper gear works really well for this.
