I am currently restoring a C, I have had problems with water getting in to the crankcase. Are these blocks known to crack? If it is cracked I live in Maryland where can I get a block for a good price? The crank, sleeves, lifters,and camshaft are in good shape, I need the block only.

my B block has cracks between the piston -- the head gasket covers them and have had no leaks so far and I use my tractor most every day

There are many Allis blocks cracked like that, I have seen posts on this forum discussing the repairs. Some with cross bolts from one side of the block to the other. I think many of these cracked blocks go on to run for a long time. Don't give up on it yet. Search in the archives or ask specificially about crack repairs on this forum.

The most common cause of water in the oil with these engines will be small holes in the freeze plugs under the rocker arms. But you can have cracks in the water jacket as well as the sleeve o rings. You can never say never but with these heads you will hardly ever find a crack in them. Pretty tuff heads.

Well since the C has wet sleeves its more likey to be sleeve seals or head gasket problems. You also might have a cracked head. I know on one C engine I have the one sleeve in #2 hole had been shaved and didn't stick up like it should have and caused the head gasket not to seal as it should have and cause problems like you have. It could also be a hair line crack in one of the sleeves and that would also cause your problem

When I bought the tractor it was not running for 18 years, I had the head completly rebuilt and checked there was no cracks in the head. I did see what looks to be cracks between 1,2 and 3,4 sleeves but I don't want to use the block if it is cracked

Well if it sat that long the sleeve seals and probably bad and need to be replaced. I'd pull all the sleeves and look for the cracks Dick talks about. If you don't find any I would put in new sleeve seals and put it back togeather.

You will have a hard time finding a block without cracks between the block cylinder bores. I have two blocks but will not part with them. That is two out of the twenty or so blocks I have had out here of my own. Those cracks are nothing to worry about (if) and I say if one side is not higher and the cracks are not wide. A wide crack means a freeze crack and you could have a crack at the bottom. The cracks that have not spread are caused from the engine over heating. That seems to have no affect at the bottom bore.

Just follow the advice that was given in the upper replies.

I hava a 41 C #552 that had small cracks between the upper cylinders and it has never leaked since I rebuilt it over fifteen years ago.

You can take the oil pan off and pressure the cooling system and look at the lower side of the sleeves and if it leaking there you will find it and you can check the freeze plugs in the head also and Dick L said.

Thats how I found my leaking sleeve o ring.
