CA cultivators

I posted a similar message over on the implement page but I thought I might ask here too, so I don't miss anyone. I've got a CA I setting up for cultivators. I moved the right ram down underneath the axel casting where I think it goes, and when I tried to lift the front tool bar, I broke the ram right in two. I got another one and the same thing happened again. Is there anything special I should be doing before I go get a third ram? I don't have a manual yet, but tonight I ordered one.

I had several CA's many years ago so recall is bad.
Before you hook the cylinders up to anything(leave them hanging) pull up on you hydralic lever.
The ram that goes first is for the front.
The slower one is for the rear lift arms. The hydralic system was timed so that when you got to the end of the row you would not leave any tire tracks when you lifted the cultivator up.

I have a CA with the plow and cultivator, I can"t find my owners manual for the cultivator, but as I remember the left (standing behind the tractor) is the lifting ram for the front half and the right is for the rear. I hope this is right. It"s been about 40 years since I used the cultivator on this tractor!
