Carb replaacement

I recently replaced the carb on my old Allis WD 48" model. This site did not have the marvel that was originally on it but replace it now with the Zenith carb which looks basically the same. I had to turn some brackets around, etc., but I got the carb linkages working like the old one. The problem now is that the tractor runs with little power. When I try to give it fuel it falls on its face and it will not run when I push the choke in completely. It wants about 1/2 choke all the time. I have adjusted the air/fuel mix screw and it will only take about 1/2 to one full turn out. Anymore and the tractor starts running rough. Any ideas how I can get this old Allis running again?

How many adjustments does the carb have?? If its like the MS carb that was on it there should be 3 adjustments. 1 is the idle stop, 2 the idle setting and 3 the main jet which should be low on the carb which is the one you need to adjust to get it to run the way it should. Now you could also have other problems like a clogged air filter, or a vacuum leak in/around the manifold or a cracked/rust out manifold and if you have that problem you can adjust till your blue in the face and never fix the problem. Start it up and spray carb cleaner around the manifold and if RPM changes then you have a leak and that need to be fixed first

Find a Marvel-Schebler TS464 series carburetor for it. It would have the right size jets to deliver enough fuel. Maybe you can get bigger jets for the Zenith- but then why was the MS the factory original?

I wondered that myself but this site sold me the Zenith as a replacement for the Marel carb. I thought they probably know considerably more than I do about these things. Ineresting, when I start the tractor, I am getting smoke around the exhaust manifold, but when I squirt carb cleaner on the exhaust/intake manifold, it does not do anything. Maybe the tractor is running so rough that I cannot tell the difference. I cannot feel any leakage when I put my hand around the exhaust manifold.
