I'm in the process of resurrecting a fence row CA. I'm redoing the wiring and switches, but I don't want to invest in the high dollar resistor light switch. I have a two position light switch that I'd like to use. Will the battery charge if I connect the field wire to the parking light terminal on the switch and then just go to the first position to charge the battery? It doesn't have parking or tail lights,

Thanks for any advice you can offer me,
Dave

Mark, the book is right. The switch is a little more complicated than i said. It actually charges 3 amps when switch is off, 10 amps with lights off in the second position for a "fast charge" and then 10 amps with the lights on so you can keep up with the current draw of the light. You dont really need 3 positions, 2 is ifne. Your switch may have a bad contact insdie on one position.

the old 6 volt generator does not have a voltage regulator or current regulator. to set the "current charge rate" they ran the field wire to the light switch. With the lights on the F wire is grounded to the frame and gets "full charge" or about 8 amps. With the lights off the F wire grounds thru a 3 ohm resistor to ground. The resistor uses some of the voltage so you only get "partial charge" or 3 amps. You can run the F wire to ground for an hour each week to keep the battery charged and have it "off" the rest of the time. or get a 3 ohm resistor from radia shack and put in series to ground to get small charge all the time. The resistor should be capable of several watts or a couple amps. look at its size.

Hi: In the booklet "Operating Instructions Model "CA" Tractor, on page 19, it says that when the switch is all the way in I should get around a 3 amp charge rate (which I do), when the switch is pulled out to the first position the lights should go on and the charge rate still should be about 3 amps, and when the switch is pulled all the way out the lights should go out and the charge rate should go to 10 to 13 amps. My switch behaves as you describe above, not as the manual describes. That is, when my switch is pulled out to the first position, the lights don't go on and the charge rate doesn't change from what it was when the switch was pushed all the way in. It's only when my switch is pulled out to the second position that the lights come on and the charge rate increases. Is the manual incorrect? Did I need to pay $77 for a three position switch when apparently a two position switch was all that is needed? Thanks, Mark

Well, many thanks to Steve from Ill. I went down to the local auto parts house and invested $3.00 in a balast resistor and hooked it in front of the ground wire from the F terminal. It worked like a champ, except it had the amp meter reading backwards. I reversed the leads and according to the meter, I'm getting 5 to 10 amps depending on the cut out and the lights.

Thanks again,
Dave
