the steel rear ends were made during the war and have a square axle rather than round, yes they are a bit lighter and are often sought as pullers because of it. they are geared the same as any other styled wc, the unstyled were geared a bit higher at first then changed in 39 when they styled version came out. not to say that perhaps someone could not have switched things around or swapped rear ends to achieve a better situation for what they wanted. good luck
