Happy new year all. I have an AC B and the bolts on the inside of the rear wheel housing that the drawbar mounts to and the two other bolts forward on the housing that I have used for snowplow brackets have most of the threads pulled or worn out. I was wondering if anyone has ideas on fixing threads. The holes only go in about one inch into the housing. cant go through or the transmission lube would leak out. They are 3/4 inch bolts.

I used the helicoil to repair the drawbar holes without any problem. the hole is deep enough to tap without going through the steel housing.

You can do as we do here when making engineering changes to molds and a bolt has to be moved to make that change. Drill it out and tap it to a larger bolt size, place the larger bolt in the hole, cut it off flush, drill the new correct hole and tap it in place. We use an insert much like the one listed below on our machines to clamp molds onto the platens. The inserts we use are installed with an Allen wrench.

Greg, all below comments are well said, but going to the next size metric can save the day in many cases. I have done this in the past, where the Heli-coil solution would be difficult. You need to take some careful measurements to see where you are with the existing holes and then see if the tap drill for the next bigger metric size will work for you. If you determine that your holes would clean up enough for the metric solution, buy a plug and bottom tap. Sometimes there isn't enough depth for the taper tap to do much good. Give this a look with the other good advice. Good luck.

There's a 2nd method of repairing stripped threads using "Keenserts". These are similar to Helicoils but don't require the special Helicoil tap. You just use the next nominal size standard tap. (See link below for description.) You can get these from McMaster-Carr also.
Search under "threaded inserts"

I agree about tapping on through regardless of product. And seal up with Permatex#2. Make sure all oil has been removed from tapped hole.

Another thing you might consider is using a drill guide to help keep the drill straight and lessen the chances of catching. This could be as simple as a piece of pipe or tubing welded to a bar of steel. Make the bar long enough to be able use a second hole to secure it in position.

im with Rod, drill all the way thru and helicoil them to size. 5/8 was standard. put thread tape or your favorite glue on the threads and should not leak, there is gear lube inside- splash lubed. Take the pan off as Rod siad and clean it up.

Greg,

Are you sure those holes are 3/4? The standard size is 5/8-11 except for the early Bs which used 1/2. Possibly someone has enlarged the holes up to 3/4 in the past. A helicoil would be a great fix but yes, there would be a problem with tapping. I don't know if helicoil makes a bottoming tap or not. If they did, I would expect it to be pretty expensive. The standard kit is going to expensive enough in that size. I don't think the 1" depth is really enough for a standard helicoil taper tap to provide much full thread. But then again, you would have that same problem with any tap. In that type of hole, once you get a thread started with a regular taper tap, you'd finish up with a bottoming tap in order to maximize the thread engagement. If I were you, I'd consider drilling right on through. Drop the final drive pan and make sure the area is clear. I think it is, at least until you run into the bull gear. That way you could tap the holes properly, using the standard helicoil kit. I wouldn't be too concerned with lubricant leakage. The level is well below the holes and if you do have a problem, you can just seal the threads with some Permatex #2 sealant. The biggest problem I see is trying to drill those holes to the proper tapping size with a hand-held drill while the housing is in place on the tractor. It's an awkward location and you will likely be lying on your back or side. A wrist twisting experience should be anticipated.

There are some epoxy-type thread fixes out there also (Devcon comes to mind) but I wouldn't have a lot of faith in them for that particular application. I'd want a full strength, new thread where I could torque down those bolts nice and tight without worrying about it. That would come from either an oversize tapped hole or a helicoil-style insert, which also requires a tapped hole.

Don't know if helicoil has a bottoming tap. However you can make one your self. Use a abrasive saw and cut the regular tap to make it a bottoming tap. Check when you order the kit and see if they have a bottoming tap. I know they sell these parts from the kits.

Keenserts sound like a good idea also. Think you will need a bigger hole though.

When we are talking this size nothing will be cheap. Or easy.

You just need to make sure you buy the correct size helicoil. They make them in a number of lenghs and diameters.
