I have a 1952 allis b that has a magnito problem. I am having a hell of a time retiming the magnito and getting it to run. I haven't had it running in over 3 months whereas before it ran like a top. All I did is wash the tractor with a pressure washer which got water in the magnito, and before I knew how important it was to keep the gears in time, I had took it apart to dry out and haven't been able to get it running since. I have followed several forum members instructions on how to retime the mag but haven't had any luck. Dad told me a distributor is alot easier to deal with.
Now, getting to my question. I have a 1952 b and was wondering if i could convert it to the distributor that came on another allis b. There is one on ebay right now. It it an easy switch? It is easier than dealing with the magnito? Anyone know where I could find one other than ebay?
Thanks
Joel

Smartest thing I ever did was find a guy to professionally rebuild my mag...mags HATE to get wet, especially high pressure wet, and while it's true that you can dry them out, there are other internal things that'll drive ya crazy if you're not familiar with the workings. Mags are great...distributors have there own set of issues...

Hi Joel,

I'd stick with the magneto. I've had a '42B for many years and would never consider changing it out to a distributor (battery ignition system). They are really not hard to time once you understand the basic principles. Have you seen my own web page on that subject? I also provide a procedure for timing the internal gears if you cannot find the specific marks on them. Doing it w/o the marks on the gears, I'd use the FIRE mark on the flywheel, to first properly mate the mag base with the engine, not the TDC mark. You also need to be sure you are on the compression and not the exhaust stroke. Using the TDC mark in such a procedure could result in incorrect timing because of the spring windup in the mag impulse coupling. The impulse coupling causes the rotor to not be perfectly aligned with the timing lug (unless you rotate the engine or mag backwards). The rotor is somewhat before the lug just before TDC and immediately snaps past it at TDC when the mag fires the #1 tower. The rotor will be exactly aligned with the timing lug only when the mag is rotating at a speed sufficient to disengage the impulse coupling. That requires the tractor to be actually running. The impulse coupling provides an ignition retard function during starting only. When the impulse coupling is disengaged due to engine speed, the ignition is automatically advanced to the proper running timing.

You can convert your B over to a distributor with another distributor off of a B. Was done a lot back in the day. I have a C and a WD that were originally mags but are now distributors. I have never switched one over but I wouldn't think it would be to hard. But you will still have to make sure that you get the distributor timed right with the motor just like you have to get the mag timed right. You will also have to have a coil and wire the coil and distributor into your ignition system. As far as being easier to deal with than a mag, you will have people argue both sides of that. The way I look at it is why did so many tractors get converted from mags? I have dealt with a couple of mags for my WC and they can be frustrating. Easiest way to get the gears back into timing in your case would be to take the mag cap off, turn you motor so #1 cylinder is on top dead center and than re assemble your cap on your mag so the rotor is on #1 cylinder. Make sure you didn't lose any of the little spring loaded brushes in the cap that make contact with the rotor.

Hope this helps

Wil

Drop me an e-mail and I will send you a mag manual. Mags for the most part are bullet proof till you mess with them. Ya you can switch them over but in the long run a distubutor will cost you more $$ to keep working then a mag will.
