This link below will lead you to info about this long lived and extensive internet scam. Apparently a lot of folks have heard about P.T.Barnums' observation, "There's a sucker born every minute".

Take the check, have the sherrif or county attorney cash it and send 'buyer' a note he will get his change if he calls the law and gives delivery info when check really clears- otherwise they will use whatever info available on warrant. County may have some money for a couple weeks in interest bearing account, gives county attorney a training case for new or student lawyer. "Buyer gets to talk to law enforcement- give them a chuckle. RN

RN: Those checks, bank drafts, Letters of Credit ad nauseum are never any good; they're routed or constructed so it takes anywhere from several days to a couple of weeks before the local bank gets the "no good" message; by that tine the suck...ooops...victim has already sent the "surplus" back to the scammers.
I sometimes find it strange that law enforcement and intelligence agencies can run down hidden-origin emails when they want to, but can't seem to do anything about this stuff...

Gary,

The theme of this Nigerian overpayment scam has been going for quite a while. I'll tell you what, if I was greedy and dumb enough to think that anyone from overseas would pay me MORE than my asking price, I may deserve to get a bogus cashiers check.
This scam is so obvious. Yes, they change the names, the locations, the "stories", but it all ends up the same. If you ask them for cash or conventional trusty methods of doing business, they always have an excuse and demand to do it their way. Can you say "BIG RED FLAG"?
