It needs a thermostat. If you can't mount one next to the head, look for one to fit the upper hose. Ford N series did that. The the thermostat fits in the hose. You might have to adapt hose diameters and you need straight hose from the head to the thermostat to be able to push it in. But that might be a simple solution.

older models didn't have a thermostat. do you have a presurized cap? need presurized cap when using thermostat. flat cap on older models. Bob

Sounds like you don't have a thermostat in the system. WARNING, if you try to pull the part where the theremostat goes you will probably brake the bolts off in the head, very very common for them to do that BTDT and its not fun/good when it happens. One easy way to check to see if you have a theremostat is to pull the temp gauge and then stick a screw driver etc into the hole, if you hit something you have a theremostat if you don't then its not there. On my C I got the theremostat out but because I have shutters I really don't need one because I can control the temp with the shutters.

Pretty much just the normal type but if I remember right it has another part it fits into so hold it in place. As I siad the biggest problem is 99% of the time the bolts will brake off and they then are fun to get out of the head. The bolts go in in a way that they have the coolant on them all the time so they rust and then brake.

In the pic is the thermostat housing and you can see the spring that coming out the botton of the housing.

Thats what holds the thermostat down. My 41 C had what was left of a spring so I didnt even put the thermostat back in.

Never had trouble getting up to temp once I out it to work and it never has ran hot eaither.
