CA Bearings and Seals

Putting bearings and seals on the front axle of a narrow front CA. One side went fine. Other side the seal wants to turn with the hub. Seal has some sort of varnish like sticky material on the felt. Hub should turn on the seal, and the seal should be stationery on the axle, but when the hub turns it is turning the seal on the axle. Anyone had this problem? What did you do? Took me forever to get the right parts, and to get to the seal I have to remove the new bearings, which I'd rather not do, but will if necessary. I've thought about tack welding the seal from the back onto the axle, but of course that is a chicken way out. Anyone got a good solution?

Phil,

I've got front end on my CA tore down at present to replace the bearings and seals. I'm looking at the new seals which have perforated tabs that go to the bearing side. Maybe if you tweak these a bit that will prevent the seal from moving with the hub. Also, you may want to check that you have not overtightened the bearing pack. Rule of thumb, Tighten to zero clearance and back off 1/8 turn or so to get the cotter key thru the lock nut and spindle.

Had that problem once, just cut a strip of beer/coke can and used is as a shim between the hub and the seal. Its still in there as far as I know.

Thanks for reply. Not sure I understand. You mean line the outside of the sealing surface? Won't that make it even tighter and make the hub less likely to turn without turning the seal also, and wouldn't it eliminate the sealing properties of the seal? I probably don't understand....

They are talking about puting a pece inside the part that you dont want it to spin on like take the seal off the spindel and put it on the serfas making the spindel biger around and then put the seal back on might have to try it a time or two to get it to work right

If you have a dial mic you might want to measure the id of the hub and the od of the seal.

Sounds like the seal isnt flared enough to hold it in the hub.

Take the seal and clean it with hot water it might have to much of the shipping junky sticky stuff on it also and use a light film of bearing grease on the seal where it contacts the axle.

As far as using the beer can for a spacer it works because I have done this before on a shredder gear box that would not hold a seal and its still there after many years of abuse.
