Hi this is a follow up on the AC B running on one cyc. it started after i drove down the road and stopped to talk to someone. it just started running on one or something. then it was all right when parked in garage. let sit 1-2 months. went to start and it's been down hill ever since. fixed manifold leak, cleaned points, checked cap, rotor, wires, new plugs, retimed mag to tractor and it's self, adjusted carb, switched wires around. it was only hitting on #3. when i switched wires it hit on #4. everything is clean, like tank, gasline, etc. what the hecks going on? i brought the mag in last night to see if drying it out and warming it up might have an effect. didn't check comp. hallp! please!

Had the same thing happen on 230 IH. Turned out the gear on the distributor was nearly striped and ever time motor was turned off and recranked it would jump time. Marvin

If no one messed With it while it was not used the first thing I would do is make sure the distributor cap has no hairline looking (cracks) Which may be High Voltage (crossfiring).I would also strongly consider the valves hanging up after setting like you said.It would not hurt to put some light lube-penetrant CENTAUR

thanx men i'm going to try the starter fluid thing. the wires i changed to see if that was it (no).i had my rotor off on the mag gear. i redid that and now it still starts great but it's hitting only on one cly. but instead of hitting on 3# or #4 it's hitting on #1. oh my head hurts. i've got points and rotor, condencer coming, maybe i should slow down and wait for the new parts before i get to crazy. gary

Sounds like you could have a crack mag cap. Spray the inside with starting fluid and then blow dry. If you then see any lines on the inside of the cap you have a cracked cap. Theres something about starter fluid and crack makeing them show up. If cracked they will just plain run funny if at all

Be sure to clean the points in the dist. cap where the plug wires go. Check the plug wires to make sure they are carrying a current to the plugs.
Good Luck.....

Gary, could you say a little more about "i switched wires"? The wires only go in a specific place. 1243 is the firing order. Find compression stoke on #1 cylinder. When cylinder is at top dead center, look at mag rotor to determine where the rotor is. The rotor is pointing to the wire it will fire. Connect this wire to #1. Looking toward the front of the tractor looking at cap, 2 is the next position clockwise, 4 is the next clockwise and finally 3.

You could hook a timing light between each plug (one at a time) to see if the fire is going to the plug. Also pull the plugs but leave connected to the mag. Ground all of the plugs. Turn the tractor over and watch the plugs fire.
