Dad was using the D-17 diesel the other day and it developed a pronounced pop from the exhaust. It sounds pretty cool; but, it shouldn't be doing it. He shut it down pretty quick. I listened to the motor while it was running and didn't hear any knocking. What is causing the popping noise? Thanks in advance for your help in identifying the problem.

Valve or injector,put some Marvel Mystery oil in the crankcase and fuel tank,Bob.

Could be an exhaust valve....maybe an injector nozzle. When is the last time you adjusted the valves?

We had the motor rebuilt a few years ago. It hasn't seen much use. I'd say about 25 hours.
