My 52 B will not turn over. I replaced the starter switch, but that isn't the problem. Not a dead battery either. It's a 12 volt with a magneto.

The obvious conclusion is that the starter is dead. New starter's aren't cheap. I found a repair kit on Ebay that includes the drive end bushing, 4 springs, and 4 brushes.

Have any of you folks experienced this problem, and if so, what was your fix? Do you think this repair kit will help me, or is it just a waste of time?

Thanks in advance. I always everyone on this board to be extremely helpful.

Have you tried giving the starter a rap with a solid object (like a hammer)? Not too hard or you may damage the case. If that works, it probably needs new brushes. Something you can do in a half an hour. I had a '56 Ford car that had close to 300k on it. I carried a ball peen hammer under the front seat and it got to the point that, before doing anything, I would open the hood, give the starter a good rap, just to get its attention, and then get in and start up.

Wow! Thanks for all the advice. Guess I have a few things to check before I throw in the towel.

Thanks again!

What Phil(va) said except place the ground on the starter case. If it does not turn that way it is probly a starter in need of repair. If it turns it is probly loosing its ground. These starters will lose it ground where it mounts. (sometimes) I have found a quick short term fix to loosing the ground where the starter slides into the torque tube is to remove the locking screw and shinning up the end on a wire wheel and then cleaning out the dimple thru the hole and turning it back in tight.

Test your starter this way. Make sure tractor is out of gear. Pull a good 12 volt vehicle close by. Hook jumper cables to the battery of the close-by vehicle. Hook one cable to the top post of the starter. Just touch the other cable to a good ground on your tractor. The starter will spin if it is good and not locked onto the flywheel. If you have the key on, the tractor should start. But make sure the tractor is out of gear or it might run over you. This bypasses all the other potential problems on your tractor and isolates if the problem is the starter.

And by the way it doesn't matter at all which cable goes to the hot post of the starter and which to ground. The starter does not care! It will spin correctly either way you hook it up.

The most ignored problem with electrical circuits is a poor ground. Pull the starter, wire brush or emory cloth on the housing, and where it mounts- that is part of checking the wires and the system- like old and others say. Do the simple stuff first- part of a good diagnosis. Takes only one poor connection to mess up a circuit. Then you move on to the next obvious. Sure, starter might be dead, but for a simple reason- so if you throw in a new starter and don't have a good circuit- the starter is still dead.

You could have a number of things wrong with it and you need to check them all to be sure what the problem is. You might have bad connections, bad cables, starter drive stuck in the flywheel or a bad starter. I would first off pull the starter and take it to an auto parts store and have it checked, most will check it for free. If it checks good then you have one of the other problems. If it checks bad ask if theres a alternator/starter repair shop close, most will do the repairs for a lot less then a new/rebuilt starter. A rebuilt starter is listed at around $140 in my catalog, and I have had a good number rebuilt for around $50-75. With out the right tools to check things putting a kit in could well be a waste of $$

Did you try pull starting it or at least turning it over by hand to make sure the engine didnt by chance lock up on you?

with 12 volts going into a six volt starter you most likely have burnt up the starter, a new starter is the only option you have.

12 volts will not burn up a 6 volt starter 6 volt wiring is heavier due to more amps with a 6 volt system
