Backfiring WD45

After 15 years of Deeres and farmalls I just crossed over and got a WD 45.

It starts good but lopes up and down when moving the accelerator and backfires on the low side.

Need to know timing procedure, also battery 6volt, is hooked up neg ground. Will also unhook the air cleaner tomorrow and see if that helps.

Appreciate any help for a Allis "Rookie"

Suppose I should tell you how to do that. Unhook the throttle rod from carb to governor arm at the arm. Place the throttle lever wide open at the quadrant. Next, push the throttle rod at the carb so that the carb is held wide open. The rod should be about 1/16" too long to fit back into the governor arm. If not you need to carefully bend the governor arm just a little. Make a tool to do this. Get 2 washers big enough to slip over gov. arm. weld to each end of a 3 or 4" long pipe. drill 1/2" hole on side of the pipe in the center. Weld a 1/2" nut over the hole and install a 1/2" bolt. Slip this device over the gov. arm and turn bolt so as to bend arm. Doing it without this tool may damage the governor.

Like wilman said a well tuned 45 will backfire when quickly backed off on the throttle. Syncronize the governor to the carb and see if that helps with the loping.

An old mechanic once told me that a well tuned Allis engine would back fire a little when you moved the throttle from wide open to idle. The loping could be something wrong with the governor.

Indeed. My WD does this... Or at least it did before I got new manifold gaskets installed. If I run it at night, it's just a hint of blue flame, and it makes a nice little pop if I slam the throttle back from wide open to idle. Ahhh... I love my tractor.

First off it should be + ground if still 6 volts but that will no cause the back fire. Most of the time back fireing is caused by either the timing being off OR the carb running way to lean so pulling the air cleaner tube should make it worse not better. I would turn the main jet out a little at a time and see if that helps if not keep going till it unscrews all the way and see if it keeps running. If it does then you have a clogged up carb which will cause your problems

There are other little things to check too, like how you have your carburetor set up, as well as are your manifold gaskets in good shape?

Backfiring is caused by fuel exploding at the wrong time. Check your firing order and make sure the plug wires go to the right plug.

If its the original 6v battery and generator setup, then it should be positive ground. Don"t know if that would make it backfire though. Check the spark plug and points gap. Spark plugs should be about .025 and breaker about .022.
