WD hand clutch

I am looking to purchase and old WD. The tractor is a little rough; but, the price it right. The problem is the hand clutch travels freely instead of snapping in and out like it is supposed to. Everything is connected correctly outside of the housing. Does anyone have an idea about what may be wrong? Would it be easy to fix or is it going to cost a lot of money and/or time?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I once bought a WD that the clutch didn't engage and disengage. The problem was with the sleeve that engaged the clutch. The previous owner had run it a long time with no oil and the knobs on the sleeve wore off of the sides so the linkage didn't have a hold to engage the clutch. I made a replacement but probably could have bought the part. Take the battery box out and remove the cover under the box. You'll see the clutch and linkage in there. If it is engaged so you can drive it all right, the clutch is probably ok and the problem is this sleeve or the linkage.

Properly adjusted clutch with good pads should have a definite snap. Remove battery box and cover underneath it. Rotate the clutch housing- should have three sets of brass shims in it. They are slotted, so just loosen, do not remove the bolts. Remove equal number of shims from each position until you get the snap. If they are already missing, consider the clutch plates shot- no more adjustment- takes a split to replace them. If the engine needs a rebuild- do it all from the front and keep the tractor on its wheels. Loosen the side rails, leave them on, but pry apart with a wedge. Otherwise- split at the rear axle and have good supports under everything. Not real expensive, but takes time.
