Local auction has an old B for sale. How old does it have to be to have hand brakes and no electric starter or lights?

I would say it's a '38 or early '39. The front wheels are the very early style. Also was there a time when they didn't have any sort of temp guage? There doesn't appear to be on sticking up through the hood but it doesn't look like there is even a hole for one...

But if you get to see it in person, the serial number is stamped into the cast right in front of the gear shift lever in the little area behind 'Tractor no.' This web page has production dates based on that number...

yes, the 38 and some 39 did not have the temp gauge or the radiator thermostat. look at the thermos housing, it might look quite a bit thinner than the later models.

Hand brakes were used on tractors prior to B-52718, C-5756 and IB-1001. This was during the 1941 production year.
