I got it all back together and running. My concern is that at idle it shows about 10 amps on the guage (I left it on but reversed the leads) and 13.5 volts on the voltmeter I installed. When I increase the throttle to 1/2 or a little more the ammeter goes against its stop past 20 amps and the voltmeter goes to almost 15 volts. Does this seem high? I got the alternator from a junkyard but had it tested before I installed it. I used the diagrams from Rod NH and Duey that I got out of the archives on this site. I reused most of the existing wire but put new connectors on it. By the way where can I get 12 volt bulbs for my lights. Thanks alot. Mike

I missed the beginning of your first thread. I am assuming that you are using a Delco 10SI alternator. In any event, if you are using any Delco alternator, the regulator is built-in. You should have between 13.8 and 14.5 volts, once the RPM of your engine is fast enough to start the charge. Anything above about 14.3 volts, and you start to boil the water away too fast - unless you are using an Optima battery - they can handle up to 15 volts. If you are using an alternator newer than a 10SI - maybe a CS121 - there will be an "S" terminal under the rubber terminal boot. Try connecting this terminal to the battery, through a pole of your ignition switch. Also, be certain that you have an accurate DC voltmeter. See if you can borrow a good voltmeter or have a technician from a good auto electric service shop check the real voltage. In any event, I would not settle for "just under 15 volts". That is just a little too hot for long battery life.

Took the battery to be tested this morning, it was bad, put new one in the ammeter now goes to about 8 after starting then drops to about 3 pretty quick and stays there.The voltmeter stays closer to 15 than 14 but it doesn't move around anymore either. I don't think I'll worry about that for now.Thanks again to everybody who helped when I asked questions and also who answered other peoples questions in past, all that knowledge is here for the finding. Mike

Replacement 12v bulbs for the really cheap auto fog lights work good. Also have a wd that had a sealed beam conversion done. don't know where they got the ring adapters.
I have seen where the internal regulators will let the voltage creep a little high.

Yes, that's high. Assuming the battery is in good shape, it should settle right back down to near zero amps and 13.5-14.5 volts in a few minutes with the tractor running, like Steve says. The voltmeter should drop to 12 volts with the engine off. I don't think I have ever noticed my charging rate increasing dramatically like yours with increasing throttle, although it will some. It could be the internal regulator but that would be odd since you had the alternator tested out. Are you sure the battery is good? By good I don't mean just being able to start the tractor. It could have a bad cell or two and still seem OK, especially in mild weather. I had a similar problem on my Oliver a couple of years ago. I had converted that to an alternator system also. It's a diesel and has two 12v batteries connected in parallel. They were both several years old. I had noticed once that the ammeter was pegged at 20 amps at half throttle and it just stayed there. Even after a long period, the charging rate would not drop off like it should have. Thinking it was the alternator/regulator, I simply replaced that. But the condition didn't improve. Only after I replaced the batteries did the operation get back to normal. The older batteries started the tractor OK, but the weather was mild. They may not have done so in mid winter. Just something to think about. My local NAPA store will provide a free battery load test for their customers. Yours might also. I'd make sure the battery passed a load test before I spent more money on the alternator. It doesn't sound like you have a wiring problem or you wouldn't be getting the action you are.

I'd try NAPA on the 12v bulbs. I don't have the standard AC lights on mine so I don't know if yours are sealed beam or just bulbs like car back-up or license plate lights use. The lights on my B are old Volkswagen backup lights that were originally 6v. I just put in standard 12v, single contact bulbs (GE#1156, I think). Anyway, NAPA ought to be able to provide you with 12v bulbs that fit your housings.

it may have a voltage regulator plrblem, but lets check the wires. i think you have a Delco so the terminals are number 2 or (F) and that wire is connected to the 12 volt lug on the back of the alternator. The other terminal is 1 or (R) and it is hot when the mtor is running (12 volt) normally comes from the switch or key. THis line also has a resistor or diod in the circuit to drop the voltage slightly and assist in chargning. I use a 10 ohm, 10 watt resistor. If your terminals are good and no corrosion, let it charge for 10 minutes to see that the battery is "full" if it dont back off to 13.7 volts and 3-4 amps after that, then the regulator is probably bad inside.
