D15 - Broken Steering Shaft

A fellow I"m trying to help has busted the steering on his 1961 D15. The steering wheel turns left & right and stops at each end, but unfortunately the wheels do not move at all. At first inspection it appears this tractor has power steering or at least power assist. Looking up under the tractor I could see an output shaft that comes down vertically from the steering box turning as the steering wheel was turned, but the plate connected to that shaft that has the tie rods ends in it does not turn. As I inspected closer, it appears that the output shaft is broken where it was pinned to the plate. The section of shaft still in the box is turning, but the section of shaft pinned to the plate, and the plate itself is not turning. I�m not really familiar with this setup and need to know the best approach to fixing this. It seems that the power steering box is part of a large bolster at the front of the tractor. It would seem that the front end would need to come off the tractor to remove the box. Does that sound correct? Would this output shaft for the steering box be available as a part, to repair the existing box, or would it be recommended to try and locate the entire box and swap it out. Any information on how to remove this shaft / box would be appreciated. Also any other items to deal with while there.

Drain oil first. Remove bolster from the tractor to remove the broken shaft.

There's quite a few parts in there. Proper gear alignment is important when re-assembling. Don't loose or destroy shims.

Here's a picture of the assembly.
It's from I&T's AC-201 shop manual.
Might want to invest in one.

...guess it is "possible" to remove the broken shaft and related parts while the bolster is still on the tractor; but would be alot easier with it off and on a bench.
The important thing is to align the gears correctly so that the left/right travels are the same.

Thanks for the info & Pic. I will be removing the bolster. Already have FEL, Stinger Pump, Tin, etc off. Ready to remove front axle then get to steering box. You mention several times about proper alignment of gears. I have R&R�d several different boxes on old Fords, and understand their sectors and alignment. Shims also, usually for proper bearing preload, so if the same applies to this box at least I have somewhat of an understanding. Definitely is a new one for me though, on an old AC. The Pic will really help. I do have a manual on the way. I would prefer to re-build this box rather than replacing the entire steering box. What are the best sources for this shaft? Would Agco be the place to find old Allis Chalmers Parts? Think they still have parts like this available? I�m trying to locate a local dealer here in New England. Thanks again for the info.

AGCO may have the parts but they're gonna be expensive.
Do a search for parts suppliers on this site.
You can also try a salvage yard or email me for another suggestion.
