D17 oil pressure, HELP!!!!!!!!

Just finished an overhaul on D17 gas -1957 model. The tractor started right up and I ran it for a minute and noticed the oil guage did not register any oil pressure. Crankcase oil level was full so I suspected the pressure guage. Put in a new guage and started the engine, still no pressure reading. Removed the oil pan and checked the oil pump. Every thing checks out OK. No blockage in the sump, drive gear on the pump looks good. Any ideas as to what the issue may be?

Thanks for all the information. I did check the filter and it is a Baldwin T300M which is the cotton filled element. My plan is to reinstall the pump, install the oil pan, refill the crankcase oil, "prime" the system somehow and install a AGCO filter. Do you Persian Orange guys have any other suggestions? I appreciate any advice! Thanks!!!

Try removing the old pump and filling it with some really thick oil or assembly lube. Lucas makes some pretty good stuff.

I always do this when I rebuild and engine and oil pressure is never an issue.

Their used to be an old timer local mechanic in MN that converted the low pressure systems to the high pressure. He made his own design and retrofitted the parts.

I have never done this, but I saw one that he had converted a few years back. It used the low pressure engine block and the newer d17 screw on filter.

Yep I agree with the others and I have BTDT on more then one. Wix now makes a filter that will work just fine also BTDT. Sorry don't have the numbers unless its the same as used on a WD or WD45

the filter can cause this problem. If you bought the filter at Napa or Wix, it is probably part or all of the problem. use only the FRAM C159 or a Baldwin T300M filter. These are a stuffed cotton filter, not a paper element. The paper does not have any backpressure and causes the low readings. I assume you have the original mason jar type threaded spin on filter. Take off the filter and see that it hs oil inside it. If not, maybe just pump oil back down the pipe toward the pump to prime it. If you dont have the FRAM filter, do it now.

Certain brands of oil filters do not work well with some AC engines. Number that comes to mind that I use is 1101, but can't remember the mfr.

On further thought,m I think the 1101 is a NAPA number I use on WD's, and I've always used the factory filter on the D17. Same as the hydraulic filter, lots longer number. Can check tomorrow.
