Hello. Mostly Ferguson guy here. Not all that knowledgeable about Allis. Have narrow front CA I use for mowing. Steering is good, no excessive play, but front wheels have wobble and seals are leaking. Looks like good winter time task. Any tips for overhauling seals, bearings, correcting the wobble? I have service manual, which says I need to remove radiator before removing pedistal. Is that really necessary for this job? Thanks in advance for replies.

I think Dick L. is on the money regarding the wheel wobble (wheel bearings). However, if you think the pedistal is leaking the 140 weight gear lub you will have to remove the pedistal. I'm in the process of doing so on my CA. The upper seal is worn out and the lower as well. Quite a mess in my garage!! You should be able to get new seals for the shaft. I've got the part #'s for those are as follows: Fedreal Mogul, upper seal is #50395S, lower 40395. I think those will work for you should you need to break down the pedistal.

Thanks a lot guys. Appreciate the advice. If I can just reclaim my shop from my stepson who has a stripped down IH Scout parked in it, I'll get to work on the AC front end.

Do they wobble together or independantly? If together than something is loose in one of the 2 gearboxes (if it is the rear that is attached to the steering wheel then the whole linkage beside the engine should wobble too), if it is independant of each other then you probably just need wheel bearings. If you remove the pedestal, yes the Rad has to come out too as it sits on the pedestal.

If and I say (IF) you do not have excessive play, why would you remove the complete front pedestal from the engine??
If you jack up the front of the tractor and can move the front wheels back and forth some and not move the arm all you would need to do is remove the four bolts at the base and remove a shim. Not knowing where the leak is you are wanting to fix could mean you would have to remove it from the engine.

Loose wheel bearings can cause the front wheels to wobble as well as a need to remove a shim or two between the upright pedestal and the front casting. I have shimmed under the gear to tighten up the play when the shims had been remove. When doing this you need to check close the steering right to left for binding. When shimming the gear, it sometimes only had real bad wear in the center and will not turn the full distance after re assembly. At that point you would need new or good gears.
