d-17 hydraulic lift

IF I refill the front resevoir with HYtran the hydraulic lift will work for a couple of times
then weaken and quit. Fluid appears to be leading into rear resevoir for transmission. It is over full and none is leaking on the ground that I can see.

Is this a common problem? How can it be fixed? Will the repair cost more than the tractor is worth?

Exactly the same thing happened on my D-17. Rebuild kit from Allis was about $15 and the gaskets were about $10. While I was at the job, I redid the brakes and put new seals in both rear wheels. It is a really heavy casting. I used an engine hoist (or crane) to lift that casting.

I'm with Steve.....I'd guess the seals are bad on the internal lift arm cylinder. If it was the hose, you would experience no lift under load.

im thinking what your saying is the hydraulic oil is leaking into the rear pto cover area where the lift arm shaft is? we had a D17 fail a hydraulic hose on the lift cylinder and it filled the rear cavity in a minute if you used the hydraulic lift. take the very back cover off so you can see the hydraulic cyliner, hose and seal insdie the compartment the pushes on the lift arm shaft.

Will, you have a either a leaking transmission input shaft seal or a PTO shaft seal between the torque tube and the transmission/differential case. To fix it right you have to split the tractor between the two cases. It takes I think one seal for the transmission input shaft and two seals for the PTO shaft plus a new gasket between the cases. While you are in there replacing seals do the o-rings on the power director shift lever and the PTO engagement lever. All the seals/parts should run under $50. It's the splitting the tractor that's hard/expensive.

As a work-around fix, you can take the drain plugs for both case, drill & tap them then run about a 1/2 inch hose or metal line between them to equalize the fluid. If you had been running 80/90 gear lube in the tranmsision, you'll need to switch over to all universal trans/hydrualic fluid in both cases. Good luck! Mike
