WF Rod caps and the shims

Never attempted before so would someone step me thru the process. The manuals are skimpy on info for a newbie. There were shims on the caps when I disassembled. I got some Plastigage.001-003, green. I never used this stuff. Do I clean the threads on these cap bolts? They have a cotter pin so the torque is less? I am using the Assembly-lube. Just step me thru the process please. Also I noticed there was safety wire on some bolts that hold the large caps for the crank. Is there a "pattern" of how those are wired to each other?

You must have proper cursh. Crush is the bearing cap compressing the bearing shell to hold it from spinning in the rod or block. Crush is (I think, look in your manual though) .002". This means with the bearing toghther but not more than finger tight, you will have .001 clearance on each side between the cap and the shims. Now when you tighten it down you crush the bearing a bit to hold lit inplace. Making it a press fit. If you plasti gauge it now and it is too loose you need to carefully file the edge of the bearing a little, remove an equal amount of shim, and try it again. I measure my bearing shells by putting them round side up and running them under a dial indicator, on a surface plate, or other flat surface. After it is all fit up, now you can take it apart and lube it, and final assemble it. And move on to the next one. I wouldn't want to do this with the engine in the tractor, but I guess you could. they come out fairly easy. And it takes a while to do it well, like hours and hours.

For the plastigage use. You must make sure the rod and piston is down tight on crankshaft. Up if the engine is on an engine stand. Cut a piece of plastigage to lay length ways on the crank. If the engine is not on a stand and upside down lay the plastigage on the bearing inside the rod cap. Place about .007 shims on both sides of the rod over the rod bolts. Install the rod cap and torque to 30 foot pounds. Remove the cap and use the paper plastigage paper cover to compare the flattened width of the plastigage. You will then be able to tell if you need to add or remove shims. After you change the amount of shims you need to recheck with the plastigage again. You need to shoot for .015 to .002 on the plastigage.

You always clean all threads on any engine project.
You use cotter keys on the rods and wire on the main cap bolts.
I torque the rod bolts on these engines to 35 foot pounds and then tighten until the cotter key will slip in.
