I recently pulled the shifter tower off and to my surprise I cannot figure out how to get it back on properly.

1. do the 3 forks on the tower slide back and forth along the shafts or do they stay mostly stationary?

2. Can anyone tell me how to align the forks on the gear groves?

3. if I bought a manual would it cover this proceedure with picture?

thanks for any help....I guess I am not as good in figuring out things s I thought I was..

The forks should not be loose-There are detents that hold them in position. Align them so that they are in neutral (center) position. Align the transmission gears so that they are in neutral. They will spin freely and match the forks position as you lower the tower into place. Now, here's the kicker-- I find it easier to get the long fork (reverse) into position if I shift the lever into reverse, and with a pry bar, move the reverse gear forward, engaging it. Lets the long fork move around other gears easier. Service manual like I&T will show components, but is short on procedure. Just trial and error to determine what works.

I am trying to figure out how to move the reverse fork (or the other 2) back and forth along the shaft without having the gear shift installed and getting in my way. It seems like I should be able to somehow manually/with my hands position the 3 forks into place before setting the tower completely down flat to the mating surface. What I would then hope to do is move the forks to line up with the gear slots if need be at the last moment... I cannot see/understand why (with the shifter removed) that I am unable to move the reverse fork (or any of the others)slightly one way or the other before making contact with the gear slots.... thanks for any insight....
