Hi,

We own a 1959 Allis Chalmers D17.

We recently decided to put in a new battery to prepare for winter.

After attaching the new battery, we went out to the barn in the morning to find the new battery completely dead. Dead as in...dead. Wouldn't even take a charge.

We replaced the battery, thinking it might have been a dud...and the replacement did the exact same thing.

We are now on our third battery that has done this.

Any ideas as to why the D17 would suddenly have a death wish for batteries?

Did you keep the same ground polarity?

If you have an alternator based charging system with a bad diod it can generate AC current. AC across a wet cell battery equals instant death for the battery.
Get er cranked and set the meter to AC then just check across the battery-if you get ANY reading this way replace the alternator.

Get a good ammeter and connect it between one of the battery posts and the cable when the lights and ignition are off. If the needle moves, you have something drawing current ALL THE TIME. You need to find the source and either disconnect it or repair as necessary.

Alternator or genny?? If it has an alternator then you probably have a short in it, or you hooked the battery up back words and smoked the alternator which will kill the first battry and then kill all the others. If its a genny then you probably have a bad V.R.. and its got point stuck closed and thats whats killing the batterys

I remember when we converted my WD over to a 12 volt system, it had a similar problem. We had the wires backwards and installed a switch to engage the alternator because it would constantly draw the battery down otherwise.
